To eradicate poverty and empower older persons economically, Helpage Kenya gives money to the project areas for the older persons to start income generating activities. The members of the two self-help groups take the money in form of loans and when they repay, the money is given to another needy member. This has proved very successful since the money rotates within the group and various older persons get to benefit from the loans.
The older persons live in old, leaking and collapsing houses but this is no longer the case.
20 houses have so far been built and the organization is in the process of building more houses and latrines in both areas. Due to limited resources however, HelpAge Kenya is undertaking construction of houses for the poor of the poorest older persons.
In Kamwangi, being an agricultural area, HelpAge Kenya often distributes seeds and fertilizers to enable them reap good yields. Kiangombe has also not been left out as they bought some cows, which they sell after sometime, and they get enough profit to start other projects of support themselves.
In our endeavor to reduce the impact of poverty among older people and orphans. HelpAge Kenya gives grants to schools to start income generating activities. The profits derived from these activities area used to support orphans in the schools enabling them to continue education just as their counterparts who have able and supporting parents.
The above activities are just a few ways of meeting our objective. HelpAge Kenya undertakes additional activities as more needs arise in the area. Our goal is to empower older persons to continue living in dignity, self-fulfillment and care. |
